Cartography: Manipulate Festival 2025

'Islands' by Alys Williams

Where are we? How do we relate to each other now? How do we orientate and anchor ourselves in this tumultuous moment?

Have you received or found a message in a bottle from a stranger?

On 12th and 13th February 2025, Alys Williams' interactive performance 'Islands' (presented as part of 'Cartography' for Manipulate Festival 2025) asked audiences to write a message to a stranger. Your message in a bottle was written especially for you in Edinburgh's Fruitmarket by a member of the audience.

We'd love to hear your message-in-a-bottle stories! Please use the form below to share your experience.

"A few years ago, a man on Shetland found a message in a bottle on the beach that had been lost at sea for 98 years. Isn't that amazing? 98 years, making its way to him on the water. And now you've washed up on these Fruitmarket islands, bringing your stories with you."

'Cartography' was created by Eilidh Appletree, Fibi Cowley, Kirsty May Hamilton, Edith Hicks, Kialy Tihngang and Alys Williams, with mentorship from Al Seed. It was produced by Al Seed Productions and presented as part of Manipulate Festival 2025.
